SVC Highlights
Temple Israel of Hollywood- Yachad: Shabbat Under the Stars

“We hosted our young professionals group (Yachad) for a Shabbat dinner. Two of our members welcomed us into their home and we ate in their beautiful garden/patio. We brought about 60 people together to enjoy a night of schmoozing and noshing (and a little bit of learning). I spoke briefly about the Torah portion “vayikra” being a reminder of what calls to us and how one of the things that we, at TIOH, are called to is environmental justice work. Our participants loved the opportunity to learn via drash and they thought the vegan buffet we offered from a local and delicious Israeli grill was next level.” – Rabbi Calvin
🌱
Jewish Community of Amherst – Kabbalat Shabbat Vegan Meal

“We had about 20 or so people which was a solid turnout for the Shabbat before Passover. We served a crispy tofu dish with rice and veggies, and our silken tofu chocolate mousse for dessert. Guests sat around 2 tables and engaged in discussion, including the text study that was provided.” -Melissa M.
🌱
Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation- Saturday Morning Services & Vegan Kiddish Lunch

“The members of our community have really enjoyed this past year of Synagogue Vegan Challenge programming and the opportunity it has provided to learn about ways to better occupy this planet and our Judaism.
For this event, we served kosher catering from the Hen House, a Kansas City grocery and deli. We served a veggie tray, “Israeli” salad, potato salad, heath salad, and a butternut squash soup. A congregant delivered a D’var on our treatment of animals.” – Lara G.
🌱
Pesach Shabbat- Moishe Pod Denver

“This vegan Pesach Shabbat went great! We used the resources from the Program Guide to help provide some educational background on WHY we are serving a plant-based meal. It was eye-opening for many of the participants who shared openly about how the impact of eating animals and animal products was much greater than they realized. We also tied in themes of Pesach, both thinking about the animal products on a typical seder plate, as well as tying in themes and ideas of freedom – freedom to choose the type of economy and society we want to build.” -Zack S.
🌱
Shabbat Lunch at Based in Harlem

“We had a great shabbat lunch program! We served vegan food from PeaceFood Cafe – pan-seared dumplings, “unchicken” tenders, japanese pumpkin, cauliflower, baby bok choy, brown rice, and dairy-free vegan vanilla and chocolate ice cream. We spoke about the connection between this week’s parsha (Shemini), which describes the sacrificial system in the mishkan as well as outlines the lists of various kosher and non-kosher animals, to talk about our relationship and responsibility to be stewards of the environment and living creatures around us. Participants raved about the food and were intrigued to consider the connection between our inability to offer animal sacrifices in a temple today and the issue of veganism.” – Rabbi Dimitry
