As our 6th cohort of the Synagogue Vegan Challenge comes to an end, I thought it would be nice to reflect back on the past year. I believe what made this cohort special was the addition of some international communities, highlighted below. This is a huge step for us in our mission to spread vegan values and ideas to Jewish communities across the world.
Here are the Synagogues that participated this year (2022- 2023):
Beth El East Windsor– Rabbi Matt Nover- East Windsor, New Jersey- Conservative
The Minyan Tzedek – Scottsdale, Arizona- Orthodox
Valley Beit Midrash– Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz- Scottsdale, Arizona – Non denominational
Shir Hatzafon- Rabbi Rebecca Lillian & Rabbi Sandra Kviat- Copenhagen, Denmark– Reform
Temple Israel- Cape Town, South Africa- Rabbi Greg Alexander- Progressive
Temple Beth Zion – Beth Israel (BZBI)– Rabbi Abi Weber- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania- Conservative
Ikar- Rabbi Zvi Zobin- Los Angeles, California- Unafilliated
Beth Shalom– Rabbi Sarit Horwitz- Memphis, Tennessee- Conservative
Here are some event highlights from this year:

Vegan Brochah!
Rabbi Greg from Temple Israel in South Africa said, “There was a nice mix of generations who attended and good feedback on the food and the texts that we placed on the tables. There were at least two people who told me, “I didn’t know vegan food tasted this good” and the mood was upbeat and positive.”

Tu B’Shvat Seder!
This is what Rabbi Abi Weber had to say:
“The activities included planting seeds, creating bird feeders, making a delicious vegan “mud” mousse, and singing Happy Birthday to our tree (Etzi). Throughout the program, we discussed the importance of caring for our environment and respecting wildlife. The volunteer who organized the program, Eileen, searched far and wide to find a vegan chocolate mousse recipe — and it was delicious!”

Tu B’Shvat Shabbat Dinner
Moishe House Phoenix (a community for young Jewish adults) hosted a Vegan Shabbat dinner (with a belated Tu B’shvat theme)! Guests enjoyed delicious veggie burgers, fruit, salad, and dessert. They also enjoyed a learning event about Tu B’shvat and Shamayim: Jewish Animal Advocacy, and how they can participate in our amazing community of animal advocates.

Another Tu B’Shvat Celebration!
Beth El- East Windsor in New Jersey hosted their first event celebrating Tu B’shvat! Ben B, synagogue representative, told us that they celebrated by enjoying a variety of fruit, juice, and best of all, delicious Vegan, Kosher Pizza from a local restaurant!

Purim Party!
Jason from Shir Hatzafon said, “The highlights of our event were our vegan hamantaschen and snacks. We were thrilled to see how much people enjoyed our vegan treats, and we received so much positive feedback.
In addition to enjoying delicious food, we also had some great discussions about the importance of reflecting our values in what we give in the mishloach manot – and how choosing vegan options can be a way to express our values and create a more compassionate world.”

Sustainable Seder at Shir Hatzafon, Netherlands!
Here is what Jason had to say about this event:
“Thanks to Shamayim’s support, we hosted a fun and meaningful event with 70+ attendees. We served tasty vegan dishes, like vegan matzo ball soup and apple-walnut charoset. The vegan “gefilte fish” was a crowd favorite!
During the Seder, we talked about sustainability, animal welfare, and freedom, connecting Passover themes to our food choices. And many I spoke to were inspired many to consider plant-based diets.
A big thank you to those who participated!
I’m looking forward to the global impact we can achieve this coming year in our 7th cohort of the Synagogue Vegan Challenge, generously sponsored by VegFund!
