The goal of this one hour long program is to have a conversation focused on learning, inspiring, and debating food ethics in a respectful and informative way. Even though this is a debate, it is a friendly debate in which we stay light-hearted, and curiosity is encouraged.
The question: Is eating meat still authentic to Judaism in modern times?
Debate Guidelines
Rabbi Shmuly will debate any Rabbi in the United States who would like to debate that eating meat is authentic to Judaism in modern times.
At least 50 members of the congregation will vote on who wins the debate, and the winner will receive a $5,000 reward which is kindly provided by a donor, not Shamayim. (Either the congregation or Shamayim will receive the reward)
You will need to have a minimum of 50 congregants attend and vote.
This is a debate, but it’s a friendly debate. Hostile attitudes or behaviors won’t be tolerated.
This can be in person or virtual depending on logistics
Not all applicants will be accepted
FAQ’s
Can I watch a recording of the debate?
Unfortunately, due to the rules set by our donor, recording of the debates is prohibited. The debates are only to be attended by the members of the community in which they happen. The good news is, we are still accepting sign ups, so you can bring Rabbi Shmuly to your own community for another debate!
How does the voting work?
Community members will vote before and after the debate, and the side which gains the most votes will determine the winner. Votes will be counted after the debate has ended and will be shared to the Rabbi very soon after.
This debate is friendly and open, the goal being learning together. Respect is of upmost importance. You can set a date that allows you time to prepare. Plus, your own community will be the ones watching, voting, and ultimately rooting for you. Don’t worry!

PAST DEBATES
Thanks to Rabbi Jon-Spira Savett and his congregation, Temple Beth Abraham in New Hampshire for participating in our second Vegan v Meat debate on January 28, 2024! It was a truly powerful conversation!
We held our first Vegan v Meat debate in Chicago on August 15! It was a great turnout with 60-70 people in their 20s & 30s. It was a truly powerful evening. We want to thank Rabbi Will & Rabbi Sarah for hosting us!
“This rabbi is betting $5,000 he can convince you to go vegan. Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz has been an animal rights activist for years. Now, he’s putting his money where his mouth is!”
