World News:

The demand for long-tailed macaques in the biomedical sector is exceptionally high, with analysts revealing last year that a solitary animal could fetch up to $60,000. Upon reaching pharmaceutical firms and research establishments, these animals are slated to reside in enclosures and undergo experimentation, evaluating a wide array of products from the weight-loss medication Ozempic to Covid-19 vaccines.

In documentation, the majority of long-tailed macaques brought into the US are designated as captive-bred, indicating they originated from research breeding facilities rather than being captured in the wild. However, some specialists argue that the illicit trade in wild-caught macaques is extensive, and a considerable portion of those utilized in US laboratories may have been trafficked from their natural habitats. In November 2022, the Department of Justice charged eight individuals purportedly linked to a smuggling network responsible for importing over 2,600 wild long-tailed macaques from Cambodia into the US using falsified permits falsely declaring them as captive-bred.

Charles River Laboratories, the primary importer of monkeys for laboratory testing, has a plan to construct the largest monkey containment facility ever seen in the United States. This project aims to occupy 500 acres of environmentally fragile terrain in Texas. Despite opposition from community members and officials, the company is moving forward with its proposal.

Charles River’s proposed monkey facility could still be built pending approval from both Texas state and federal authorities. This is why we urge you to join us in speaking out against this project before any construction begins.

Cruelty Free Tips!

Keep in mind that many products may have a generic bunny logo, claim to be “cruelty free”, or “against animal testing.” These may not be complete truths. Some companies will still test some of their ingredients on animals, sell in countries where animal testing is required, or just make empty promises of being “against animal testing.” In addition, “vegan” products that don’t contain animal products, may still be tested on animals.

Tip #1: Start with one category at a time.

Switch your hair care one month, then skin care, and household cleaners the next. When you spread out the changes over time, it can feel more manageable and in turn hopefully be longer lasting.
